How it is calculated

Compound ≈ 0.13 lb per sq ft for tape + 3 coats (less for fewer coats), based on the standard ~475 sq ft coverage of a 61.7 lb / 4.5-gallon box. Tape ≈ 0.5 linear feet per square foot of board. Mesh vs paper tape and texture work change the figure, so treat it as a buy-this-many-buckets guide.

Common questions

How much joint compound do I need?

About 0.13 lb per sq ft for a full tape-and-three-coat finish — so roughly one 4.5-gallon box per 475 sq ft. The calculator scales it to your area and coats.

How much drywall tape?

Roughly half a foot of tape per square foot of board. A 500 sq ft job uses about 250 ft, so one 250 ft roll plus a spare.

Paper or mesh tape?

Paper is stronger for flat seams and inside corners; mesh is easier for beginners and patches. Both cover about the same length.

How many coats does drywall need?

Tape coat plus two to three finish coats is standard, sanding between the later coats. Skim or repair work uses much less.
