A mulch calculator works out how much mulch you need — in cubic yards and bags — from your bed area and the depth you want to lay. Mulch is sold both bagged (2 ft³) and bulk (by the cubic yard), and this shows both so you can pick the cheaper option.
People routinely under-buy mulch because beds are deeper and larger than they look. Enter the area and depth and it gives the exact volume, plus how many bags that is.
Volume = area × depth, converted to cubic yards (÷ 27) and to bags using your bag size (2 ft³ default). Mulch settles and compresses, so order to the calculated depth rather than shorting it; bulk is cheaper per yard than bags for larger beds.
A 20 × 10 ft bed (200 sq ft) at 3 in deep needs about 1.85 cubic yards of mulch — roughly 25 bags of 2 ft³.
