A wall framing calculator estimates the studs and plate lumber a wall needs from its length, the on-centre stud spacing (16 or 24 inch) and the number of openings. It adds the framing real walls actually need — the extra studs at doors, windows and corners — not just the bare field count.

The naive 'length ÷ spacing' figure always comes up short because it ignores the king and jack studs at every opening and the extra studs at corners and T-walls. This builds those in.

How it is calculated

Field studs = wall length ÷ on-centre spacing + 1. Openings add ≈4 studs each (king, jack and cripple framing); corners and intersections add a couple more per ~40 ft. Plate lumber = wall length × plate runs (3 for a bottom plate plus a doubled top plate). Counts are for planning; follow your stamped framing plan and local code.

How many studs do I need for a wall?
Wall length in inches ÷ spacing + 1 for the field, plus extras at openings and corners. A 40 ft wall at 16 in OC is ~31 field studs before openings.
16 or 24 inch on centre?
16 in is the residential default; 24 in (advanced framing) uses less lumber but needs the right stud size and sheathing. Check your plan.
What's a double top plate?
Two stacked top plates that tie walls together and carry loads — standard in most framed walls, so plate lumber is about three wall-lengths.
Does this include openings?
Yes — it adds roughly four studs per opening for jack, king and cripple studs, plus corner framing.
